Hair Care Tips
Hi all
Here is an interview that I did with hair stylist, and in my opinion hair genius, Alan Gaiteri.
Alan, What is your background in hair care?
I have worked in this industry for about 23 years now both in NY and in Orlando, and worked as a platform artist, educator, and motivational speaker for Paul Mitchell Hair Products and former educator for Kenra products
Alan, why is it that two women can get the exact same color or treatment and have two very different results?
"... For the same reason as no two people have the same two thumb prints. Everyone's body is completely different so the results are bound to be slightly different."
" Also each stylist has his or her own personality and will add their own touch to a particular style."
What is the worst thing you can do to your hair?
Use inferior products or store bought products. " After all, what does a stock boy know about your hair. ...Too much protien and over conditioning can actually stress the hair....most people think that by putting a moistiorizer in their hair will fix it, but a protien based reconstructer is what most likely they will need. It's always best to consult with thier stylist ."
How can you get overprocessed hair back to great condition?
It is going to take some work. Use a reconstructor to rebuild your hair; use great products and work with your stylist until it is back good condition.
Are there any vitamins or minerals you can use to get hair back into shape?
Use a reconstructor that is protein based. Silk and wheat proteins are easiest to find.
How often should you cut your hair?
At least every 6 weeks to maintain your hair style. This should also help with breakage. Although the myth that cutting hair will make it grow is not true, cutting your hair this frequently will help stop breakage and make your hair look fuller.
What is the best way to choose a stylist?
If you see someone with a style you like, ask who does their hair or if you here a stylist's name mentioned two or more times, schedule a consultation.
Should men/women bring a picture of a style that they want?
"Yes! It is a form of communication. A picture can help relay the clients wants and likes to the stylist, and open up a dialogue about thier hair"
What is your personal philosophy about being a stylist?
Integrity. Personal integrity and integrity of hair care. I won't do anything to compromise either.
" I love what I do. This isn't a job that I do from 9-5. This is my career and I am passionate about it."
Also keep learning and changing. I get bored and expect that my clients do too. "...many times both the stylist and client need to step out of the box and try something a little differant......sometimes it may be to add bangs, or change a part. other times it can be to grow it out if it's short, or cut it off if it's long....just something to make things a little more fun!"
What is the greatest thrill that you get out of being a stylist for those of us that might consider this as a career?
.....".I love seeing the face of a teenager who might be a little insecure, and have her walking out feeling like a prom queen....or a woman who just lost some weight and wants to look as sexy as she feels...or even the new mom who feels like she lost her identity since the baby, and NEEDS to stand out......these are the types of people that make me happy to get out of bed and make me feel like i have made a difference in someones life."
Any final words of wisdom?
"I've done this for a long time, and there are times when I think I've seen and done everything there is to do with hair...but then I'll see a new style, a new color, or a new technique, and then it's a whole new ball game! Now i'm ready to go into the salon and try it out and get reinspirered, and thats the best reward! I get to have fun on a daily basis....I get to see my friends,( my co-workiers, AND my clients) express my art, AND get paid for it! I feel as if I am the luckiest man on earth for being able to do what I do!"
Thanks to Alan for this interview. I learned alot!.
Alan can be found at the Cut and Color Room of Orlando. I highly recommend hi. He is the only one I will let touch my hair color.
Sincerely,
