Interview with a Salon Owner
Interview with Scott Ball, owner if The Cut and Color Room, Orlando, Florida.
Background: Scott has worked in the salon industry for over 14 years.
When asked why he started his own salon:
” … to have the freedom to make changes that will positively affect clients and the team that I work with.”
What part do you like the most?
“Which part? I like being a stylist because it is like being the most popular kid in school. People will call and book you out a year in advance and share with you things that they would never share with other people… You get to touch people in a way a lot of people ( doctors, dentists, etc…) never get to. People actually look forward to seeing you and get to look and feel better. It is very gratifying.”
What is your most requested service?
” We are the cut and color room. Most other salons get people requesting consultations and tours. Here they walk in ready to request a cut and color.”
How do you choose products?
“I have researched internationally… hair shows, internet, magazines… and have found products that are the best for our clients’ hair. These products are results based and do exactly what we want them to do. We carry 5 lines.”
What advice would you give to other salon owners?
Treat your staff in the way that you wish for them to treat your guests.
“In a way my staff are my guests. We are extremely employee friendly and offer Benefits Programs, 401K, medical, dental, etc.. We ask a lot of our staff and this is our way to repay them.”
What training do you provide to your staff?
In house training and education classes that we fly to througout the year.
What is the biggest honor that you have received so far?
I was chosen as only 1 in 15 people in the United States to turn our salon into a GHD Academy. GHD’s plan is to think globally but train locally. Alan Edwards, from the UK, will be training 15 directors from each continent and that training will be brought back locally from the salon to keep all GHD salons moving ahead of fashion.
Do you offer any classes to your clients?
We offer regular styling classes plus classes on how to use the GHD styling iron. The GHD styling iron allows you to create straight hair and curls. Although we are not legally required to show you how to use these styling irons, I would never sell one to a client without making sure that they knew how to use it properly. It is a matter of integrity. I consider my clients my best advertising, almost like walking billboards. I want them to look their best wether they have just left my salon or have learned how to use our tools at home.
Finally, what is your philosophy on being a salon owner?
Create a no attitude environment, where your staff comes to work to make people happy; loves what they do; works together as a team. This attitude should start when your client walks through the door and continues to their parting farewell. That is the Cut and Color Room Experience.
Thank to Scott for taking the time to share his experience as a salon owner with us.
Sincerely,
